Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail. Trail running at altitude.

The Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail (PAGT) is one of the most prestigious trail running events in the Alpine region. Every year, runners compete on high Alpine trails between glaciers, ridges and lower sections. The event embodies athletic challenge, running precision and respect for Alpine nature. After the race comes recovery: at Hotel WildSpitze, you will find space to unwind at our GletscherSpa, with fine cuisine and soothing tranquillity that bring your body and mind back into balance.

The Rifflsee circuit, classified as easy, is 11.6 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 630 metres. Starting in the village of Mandarfen, you cross the bridge towards the local mountain rescue station and follow the farm track on the left up to Taschachalm hut. From there, continue towards Lake Rifflsee until the trail branches off to the left.

At the top, keep to the right at the lake, then follow the signs to the Sunna Alm hut and the top station for the Rifflseebahn cable car. Then walk down to Rifflsee, take a leisurely stroll around the lake and descend via the trail back to Taschachalm, returning to Mandarfen via the familiar path. A coherent circuit providing plenty of scenic views.

This moderately difficult 9.5-kilometre trail requires sure-footedness and stamina. From the top station for the Gletscherexpress cable car, follow the signs downhill towards Braunschweigerhütte. On the glacier, follow the marker poles. After the crossing, the trail goes up again until you reach the mountain hut.

The return route takes you down to the valley via the Jägersteig path, then on via the 'Notweg' (emergency path) past Gletscherstube to the Gletscherexpress bottom station in Mittelberg.

On this 15.9-kilometre route, which is classified as difficult, you run along a river to the village of Plangeroß. Then things get serious: the trail climbs steeply, past Plangeroßalm hut to Kaunergrathütte (2,817 metres above sea level). Via the Steinbockjoch saddle (2,950 metres above sea level), you pass a mountain lake and continue over the Sassen to the emerald-green Mittelberglesee lake.

The trail then leads down to the right towards Neururer Alpe/Trenkwald (not to Verpeiljoch), following the stream into the valley. The return journey is by bus or on foot, covering around five kilometres. Full equipment is mandatory for this long Alpine high-altitude tour.

Pitztal Summer Card. Making smart use of altitude.

The Pitztal Summer Card makes trail running in Pitztal Valley more flexible. Ascents and descents with cable cars facilitate access to high-altitude starting points or provide relief after a strenuous run. Public transport in the valley is also included. This allows you to vary your training sessions, combine routes and reach specific altitudes – ideal for anyone wanting to carefully plan their trail running holiday in Tyrol.
