Hotel WildSpitze and its history

VStarting from being the first hotel in the valley to achieve 4-star superior status

Opened in 1960, WildSpitze was the very first hotel in the entire Pitztal Valley. What started off as a small guesthouse for mountain lovers soon turned into a 4-star superior spa hotel in Tyrol – run by three generations, characterised by consistency and a passion for the mountains.

While the hotel has been gradually expanded, it has never lost its signature charm. Despite all its transformation, Hotel WildSpitze has remained a place that connects people and brings out the power of the mountains.

1919 – Deeply rooted in Pitztal Valley

Born in 1919 in Pitztal Valley, Alois Melmer is the oldest of ten children. His younger years were marked by simplicity, hard work and the great outdoors. As a young goat herder, he soon learned to adapt to changing weather, terrain and seasons. His origins are reflected in his mindset to this day: down to earth, eager-handed and closely connected to the mountains.

Alois kept working as a goat herder in different Alpine pastures until 1933. His day-to-day life was simple and shaped by the mountainous environment. After completing his training as a shoemaker, he became self-employed, paving the way for what was to come.

Alois worked in torrent and embankment control in 1938, before being conscripted in 1940 and deployed to Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. After the war, he embarked on a long journey on foot to return home to Pitztal Valley, where he first worked as a shoemaker again and later as a wood gas lorry driver, making important deliveries within the valley.

1952 – A guesthouse as a home

In 1952, Alois Melmer learned about a house that was up for sale in the village of Mandarfen. He purchased and renovated the property and set up a number of guest rooms. Together with Martha, who would go on to become the soul of what is Hotel WildSpitze today, he created a place that radiated warmth and openness, gradually growing and evolving.

On 26 November 1960, the very first hotel in Pitztal Valley opened its doors. Equipped with 40 beds, simple interior and a great deal of dedication, WildSpitze began to welcome mountaineers and hikers as guests. Some soon turned into regulars, sharing stories and enjoying a drink or two in the iconic Wildspitzkeller, a popular bar that opened in 1961/62. Alois also built a ski lift in the village of Mandarfen together with his neighbour Pechtl.

1978 is the year when WildSpitze was expanded and modernised. With more rooms and communal areas, convenience and comfort increased, without compromising on the hotel's traditional character.

With the opening of the glacier cable car in 1983, the mountains got even closer and became more accessible. Pitztal Valley experienced a period of growth, opening up new opportunities for Hotel WildSpitze: longer seasons, more profound experiences in nature and increased popularity of the valley paved the way for future success.

1985 – Breaking new ground

In 1985, the hotel was again upgraded and expanded. With increased room capacity and new hotel areas, a new generation took over: Doris, daughter of the owners, was now at the helm together with her husband Franz. WildSpitze remained a family business, with new impetus and a clear direction.

1987 and 1988 saw the addition of new apartments, suites and a tennis court. What started off as a basic mountain hotel now became a multi-faceted holiday destination meeting diverse expectations. However, the hotel's key features remained unchanged: genuine hospitality and a passion for the great outdoors.

The family acquired a plot in the village in 1990, laying the foundation for future expansions and long-term development.

In 1992, WildSpitze's first spa area, the Roman Thermal Bath, opened its doors. Saunas, baths and relaxation areas brought new direction and fresh impetus. Wellness was already part of the hotel's DNA from an early stage.

In 1998, a new building was added, expanding the capacity to 120 beds. With an indoor pool, gym, hair stylist, beauty and massage areas, WildSpitze continued to grow and become one of the signature hotels in Pitztal Valley.

A staff building was constructed in 2001. By creating this modern living space for their team, the family showed how important it is to cater to one's people and offer a stable environment. To this day, this is one of Hotel WildSpitze's main pillars for success.

2017 saw the construction of an indoor-outdoor infinity pool, complemented by an extensive garden, the GletscherSpa and a larger dining hall. The hotel became even more open and focused on hospitality, clarity and great views.

2018 – 4-star superior status & new responsibilities

WildSpitze became a 4-star superior hotel in 2018. This was also the year when the business structure changed and daughter, Maria Strobl took over as Managing Director. The next generation was now at the helm, upholding the values that Alois and Martha had enshrined.

The hotel was gradually expanded between 2019 and 2025, with a new entrance area, a larger staff building, underground parking, new kitchen and buffet facilities, a new indoor infinity pool, more rooms and a reshaped outdoor space being added. In 2025, the WeinSpitz wine tavern, a new south-facing façade and reception area were created.

WildSpitze never stands still. Always up to date and up to speed, the hotel never loses sight of what matters. Built on the foundation laid by Alois Melmer decades ago, the mission for the years to come is clear: continuing the journey, deeply rooted in the mountains, but always open to the future.
